Der Lehrstuhl für Südostasienkunde der Universität Passau nahm seine Arbeit zum Sommersemester 1984 auf. Damit war das erste Institut in der damaligen BRD geschaffen worden, das sich in Forschung und Lehre auf die Länder Südostasiens konzentrieren konnte: auf Indonesien, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Kambodscha, Vietnam, Myanmar, Singapur, Brunei und die Philippinen. Dieser Fokus macht die multidisziplinäre Ausrichtung des Lehrstuhls deutlich.
Since 2005, Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Passau are located at the International House at the banks of the Inn river. Our team consists of two full professors (Susanne Schroeter, Rüdiger Korff) and 10 lecturers / researchers from different academic fields. Additionally, several Ph.D. students financed by scholarships from organizations like the DAAD or foundations like Hans Seidel Stiftung or Friedrich Ebert Stiftung do research work.
The focus of research and teaching are processes of post-colonial transformation in Insular and Mainland Southeast Asia, including South-West China. Particular fields of study are:
development policy
economic transformation
gender, religion and culture
urbanism
conflicts, catastrophies and state formation
A special feature of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Passau is an extensive language programme. Regularly courses reaching from basic to advanced levels are offered for
Indonesian
Thai
Vietnamese and
Chinese language
